CA iTalk live: Successful exchange on decision-making processes

Yvonne Wicke | 3. February 2025

On January 31, 2025, the CA iTalk live of the CA controller akademie took place - with great success! Our Managing Director Philipp Wicke was there as a guest and discussed the highly topical subject together with Brigadier General Lutz Kuhn under the moderation of Jens Ropers:

"Decision-making - how bias, data and emotions influence us."

Decision-making is a key issue in companies, especially in times of rapid change and an increasing flood of data. But how do we really make decisions? What factors influence us - consciously or unconsciously? And how can managers make better decisions?

What factors influence decisions?

In the one-hour discussion, various types of decisions were highlighted:
Procedural decisions - predefined procedures and processes
Automated decisions - supported by algorithms or artificial intelligence
Intuitive decisions - based on experience and gut feeling
Analytical-rational decisions - data-supported and systematic

A particular focus was on the tension between intuition and analysis. While data is becoming increasingly important, purely data-driven decisions are not always the best choice. Intuition and empirical knowledge play a decisive role - but must be consciously reflected upon in order to avoid cognitive biases.

Cognitive biases and decision traps

Philipp Wicke emphasized in the discussion:

"Decisions are heavily influenced by cognitive biases, data and emotions. There is a risk here, and we need to be aware of how these influences change the decision-making process. But the usefulness of heuristics and simple decision rules should not be underestimated."

It is essential to be aware of these unconscious patterns, especially in the area of corporate management and controlling. Data helps us to make well-founded decisions - but it must be interpreted correctly. One-sided analyses or excessive trust in algorithms can lead to incorrect conclusions. At the same time, heuristics and empirical knowledge can offer valuable shortcuts in the decision-making process.
